Item Description
An early 18th century basket hilted sword of typical Scottish form. Overall the sword is in pitted condition. The basket guard is of fully developed type, complete, and has retained its shape.
The main guard panels are framed within theĀ usual structure of bars. The panels are pieced with circles and triangle shapes flanked by border engraved lines. The tops of the three arms of the guard are tucked into a grooved cut around the underside of the onion shaped pommel to secure the hilt structure. The pommel is engraved with three sets of triple lines which radiate from the pommel button to the pommel edge with three crescents formed from similar sets of triple lines between. The hilt was not made with a wrist guard.
The grip is of spirally grooved wood without any binding with the remains of a liner at the base.
The tapering blade is of lenticular section and has an incised running wolf mark on each side near the hilt. The blade is 31.5 inches long (80 cm) and overall the sword is 36.75 inches long (93.5 cm).
